Texas Senate set to Reduce House Transit Appropriations

The Texas Senate is poised to pass their version of the General Appropriations Bill over the next several days. The Senate version will reduce public transit funding by some 29.1 percent from that version proposed by the Texas House of Representatives.

Texas Senate votes to Expand Transportation Commission

On Thursday, April 24, the Texas Senate voted to expand the Texas Transportation Commission from the current three members to five. Senate Bill 409 by Sen. Eddie Lucio of Brownsville, also calls for regional representation on that body.

San Marcos Transit Center

At San Marcos’ transit center, Greyhound runs two Austin-bound buses a day and 17 other intercity routes from the San Marcos Station. Amtrak has two passenger trains a day stopping en route between Austin, San Antonio and elsewhere. And Hays County Taxi, the city’s cab company, is setting up shop at a new counter inside the station. “It’s well ahead of its time,” said Michael Aulick, executive director of the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, which decides how federal transportation money is spent in Central Texas. Aulick’s group is one of the leaders in the talk of having these transit mixes in Austin. “It’s the first commuter rail station to be built.”

New Houston survey recognizes Role of Mass Transit

Despite the growing economic worries, mobility issues continued to top the list of local concerns. This year, 33 percent of respondents named traffic congestion as the most serious problem facing area residents. Increasingly, the survey showed, Harris County residents believe mass transit systems should play an important role in relieving the area’s mobility problems.
