Sarah Cook elected to TTA Board

Sarah Hildalgo Cook, Transportation Director of the Community Council of South West Texas (Uvalde), has been elected by her peers to fill the vacant rural position on the Board of Directors of the Texas Transit Association. Ms. Cook was seated by the TTA Board at their meeting of Friday, Feb. 13. Her term ends in the summer 2005.

FTA recognizes Sun Metro Achievement

Sun Metro gets award for error-free contracts

The Federal Transit Administration recently gave Sun Metro a rare achievement award because a detailed audit of Sun Metro’s procurement contracts failed to find a single problem.

Sun Metro Director Terry Lee Scott and city Purchasing Agent Byron Johnson did a show-and-tell about the award at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“This is a plaque that has never happened — ever,” Johnson said, holding up the plaque from the transit administration.

Union Plaza opens in El Paso

About 250 people braved the chilly grand opening of the city’s Union Plaza Transit Terminal just long enough to get a peek at the gleaming, refurbished Locomotive No. 1. Many huddled around portable heaters, while others frequented the coffeepots as Mayor Joe Wardy and other dignitaries saluted the city’s success in building the $11.3 million transit, retail and parking facility Downtown at San Antonio and Durango streets.

US Senate passes Reauthorization Bill

The Senate approved a $318 billion highway and mass transit measure on Feb. 12, a 47 percent increase over the current six-year act, in the face of a presidential veto threat and resistance from conservatives who accused their colleagues of embarking on a spending spree despite a rising deficit.

Focus now shifts to the House of Representatives.
