2008 APTA Hall of Fame Winner

October 14, 2008 in News

reba malone.jpg Texas Transit Association (TTA) Board Member, Reba Malone, has been named to the 2008 APTA Hall of Fame. She was the first woman to serve as APTA Chair.
Mrs. Malone’s involvement with transportation began in 1976, with her appointment to the San Antonio Transit Board, by then Mayor Lila Cockrell. During her tenure there, she worked toward the adoption of a sales tax that helped form San Antonio’s Via Metropolitan Transit, where she then served on the board of directors for nine years.
Her work in this capacity led to becoming the first woman to serve as chair of the APTA Board. Reba served two full terms in that position from 1987 to 1988.
During Reba’s last year as APTA’s chair, the American Public Transportation Foundation (APTF) was organized under her leadership, following which, she served as that organization’s first chair. She remains on the APTF board, and currently serves on several of its committees.
In addition, Reba has given of herself on the Board of Directors of South West Transit Association (SWTA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Public Transportation Advisory Council (PTAC).
There is no doubt Reba Malone’s accomplishments are numerous. Known by most of her associates simply as “Reba,” she commented on her newest honor, APTA’s Hall of Fame,  “I am truly honored and proud to be nominated. It makes me very happy to know that I helped to open doors for women in public transportation.”
