El Paso and its transit system, Sun Metro, have a number of projects continuing to gather steam.

Projects include planning for an $11 million, 419-space parking garage and trolley terminal at its new Union Plaza redevelopment district that shall encourage commercial development when it opens next February. Work began last August. The Unionn Plaza Terminal will also ahve 8,000 square feet of retail space, where Sun Metro director Terry Lee Scott envisions a daycare center, coffee shop and dry cleaning business. “We hope that the trolley terminal is the core of Union Plaza revitalization,” Scott noted.
Other projects include a $50 million “Great Streets” revitalization program; a binational international bus service that will include a dedicated bus lane over the Rio Grande River; and a $10-12 million “Smart Starter Line” light rail project connecting the El Paso-Juarez border bridges with Downtown El Paso with a construction start date of late 2003 or early 2004 and a projected completion in year 2005.
