The U.S. Department of Transportation released $15 million in transit grants Friday to transit agencies in four Texas cities, including Houston and The Woodlands.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority received $4.5 million for its Advanced Transit Program. The money will be used to continue planning light rail expansion and commuter rail. Metro also got a $2 million federal grant to expand Park & Ride lots at West Bellfort and Kingsland and to build a lot at Barker Cypress. The construction will add 1,500 parking spaces for commuter-bus riders.

A $1.2 million federal grant went to the Brazos Transit District in Montgomery County to subsidize commuter-bus service from two parking lots in The Woodlands.

Transit agencies in Austin and Lubbock also received federal money.
