The South West Transit Association (SWTA) has honored U.S. Rep. Charles A. Gonzalez, D-San Antonio, with the organization’s 2003 Legislator of the Year award.

Gonzalez was nominated by VIA Metropolitan Transit Agency, San Antonio’s mass transit system, for his support of public transportation in the San Antonio area and for his efforts in helping the agency obtain federal funding for its bus replacement program.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” Gonzalez says. “I have been a strong supporter of VIA’s efforts to expand and modernize the VIA bus fleet. I want to ensure that in the future VIA is well equipped to provide its service to San Antonio and to all of those people who have come to rely on VIA everyday.”

Gonzalez has served the 20th District of Texas since 1999. He is currently helping VIA to obtain federal funds for bus replacements through the 2003 appropriations process. In addition, he is involved in the reauthorization process for the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st century.

Every year, the SWTA Legislator of the Year award is given to a member of the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate who has significantly advanced the interests of public transportation during the previous year.

The South West Transit Association is a regional association that represents the interests of transit agencies and related organizations in Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
