VIA earned the national award for the metropolitan transit authority’s use of propane as an alternative fuel to power some of the agency’s VIAtrans vans, support vehicles, 30-foot buses and streetcars. VIA purchases more than 2.5 million gallons of propane annually.

“We are very honored to receive this award,” says VIA President and CEO John Milam. “We fully back the efforts of the Propane Education and Research Council to promote the use of alternative fuels.

“VIA has been using propane since 1992, and we committed to this fuel as a way to help reduce our fleet emissions and reduce our reliance on traditional petroleum fuels.”

VIA provides bus services throughout Bexar County. It has 1,670 full- and part-time employees.
