TxDOT Public Transportation Division Requirements

Requirements

Beginning with the summer of 2001, the Texas Department of Transportation [TxDOT] has required the use of alternative-fuels (66KB; Portable Document Format) in the procurement of any new vehicles when such a procurement is made using Department discretionary funds.

Exceptions

TxDOT now provides an "exceptions" policy in those cases where, for one reason or another, it is impractical to employ a new alt-fuel vehicle. Operators must document and substantiate the need for such an exception, however, in order to digress from the TxDOT alt-fuel requirement.

Definition of "Alternative"

TxDOT has also modified its definition of "alternatively-fueled" vehicles. The prior policy, a work in progress, had defined "alternative fueled vehicles" as single-source, non-diesel fuels, such as propane, CNG, LNG, all-electric, etc. The formalized policy expands this definition to also include dual-fueled vehicles, such as gasoline-electric and other hybrids that might employ diesel or gasoline in conjunction with al-fuel.

Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel

The TxDOT definition allegedly now includes Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) if an operator can validate that the fuel is available in their service area for use. Call TxDOT Public Transportation Division for more information.

Request Form

The TxDOT Exceptions Request form (126KB; Portable Document Format) has been provided to each transit operator by way of their TxDOT District public transportation coordinator [PTC] for forwarding to their operators.
